Spray tan for homecoming, prom and senior portraits: when to book
3 min read
In this guide
Get your spray tan two days before homecoming or prom (Thursday for a Saturday dance), or one to two days before senior portraits, so the color fully develops and the bronzer rinses off before the dress or the camera. A custom airbrush tan lasts 7 to 10 days with good aftercare. At Sunkiss Studios in Falls Church, a first tan is the $78 Signature Custom, which rinses in 8 to 12 hours. Dance tonight? Book the Rapid Signature ($98) instead: it rinses in 2 to 4 hours, and the color keeps deepening after that first shower.
When to book, event by event
| Event | Book your tan | Why this timing |
|---|---|---|
| Homecoming on Saturday | Thursday | Color fully developed and rinsed by the dance |
| Prom on Friday | Wednesday | Same rule: 24 to 48 hours ahead |
| Senior portraits | 1 to 2 days before the session | The camera sees settled, even color, not bronzer |
| Dance tonight | The morning of, Rapid Signature | Rinse in 2 to 4 hours, color keeps deepening for about 24 hours |
The same rule covers a military ball, a winter formal or graduation photos: 24 to 48 hours ahead. Two days out is the sweet spot for a standard tan, because color peaks at roughly twenty-four hours and you get a day to live in it before anyone photographs you.
Rapid or Signature for a same-day event?
The Signature Custom ($78) rinses after 8 to 12 hours, so it suits a tan booked a day or two ahead: you sleep in it and shower in the morning. The Rapid Signature ($98) is the same custom blend in a faster-developing formula, rinsed in 2 to 4 hours, so it fits a dance that starts tonight. The color keeps deepening for about 24 hours after that first shower, so judge it the next morning. If you have a clear 24 to 48 hours before the event, the Signature Custom gives you the same result for less.
Will it get on the dress?
The brown you see on the way home is mostly cosmetic bronzer, and that bronzer is what transfers to fabric. The color underneath does not transfer at all. After your first rinse, bronzer transfer is over. Until then, wear loose, dark clothing.
Wearing white or a light color? We have clear solution, which has no bronzer to transfer. Text us at (571) 205-7890 to ask for it when you book.
Prep the day before
- Shower, exfoliate, and shave 12 to 24 hours before your appointment, and finish any waxing 48 hours out.
- Arrive with clean, bare skin: no lotion, deodorant, makeup, or perfume.
- Wear loose, dark clothing and sandals to leave in.
The session itself takes about 30 minutes: a consultation to match your undertone, the airbrush application, and a finishing powder to set it. Your artist gives you an exact rinse time before you leave. Full detail lives in the spray tan prep checklist.
Senior portraits and photos
For a portrait session, book 1 to 2 days before so the bronzer is gone and the color is even under studio lights and flash. The Photo-Ready Contour ($118) adds hand-airbrushed face and body definition on top of the full custom tan, built for cameras. Because the tan lasts 7 to 10 days, a well-timed session can also carry a portrait shoot and a dance in the same week.

How many days before homecoming or prom should I get a spray tan?
Two days before: Thursday for a Saturday dance, Wednesday for a Friday prom. For events, book 24 to 48 hours ahead so your color fully develops and your first rinse is behind you before the dress goes on.
The dance is tonight. Is it too late?
No. The Rapid Signature Tan, $98, lets you rinse in 2 to 4 hours, and the color keeps deepening for about 24 hours after that first shower. It is ideal before same-evening events.
When should I get a spray tan before senior portraits?
Book your tan 1 to 2 days before your session. The color is fully developed by then and the bronzer has rinsed off, so the camera sees an even, settled tan. The Photo-Ready Contour, $118, adds hand-airbrushed face and body definition built for cameras.
Will a spray tan get on my dress?
The brown you see on the way home is mostly cosmetic bronzer, and that bronzer is what transfers to fabric. The color underneath does not transfer at all. After your first rinse, bronzer transfer is over. Until then, wear loose, dark clothing. For a white or light dress, we have clear solution, which has no bronzer to transfer.
